In the spring of 2023, volunteers from the Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) received an alarming call about a severely injured dog tied to a fence. Although they were concerned from the outset, the full gravity of the situation only hit them upon arrival.
They found a dog, later named Marco, who was in such a dire state that he was almost unrecognizable. “His face was swollen about five times its normal size,” the SRSL team shared in a Facebook post, describing how he suffered unattended in the sun.
Marco, despite the agony he endured while waiting for rescue, perked up at the sight of the team. Even though he could not express it fully due to his condition, he was overjoyed to see the rescuers. “His entire body was filled with infection,” the team explained, urging him to stay strong and fight.
The volunteers carefully freed Marco and transported him to their animal hospital for an extensive treatment process. “He had become septic,” they reported, detailing how he needed months of treatment with IV fluids, antibiotics, and other medications.
The rescuers could only speculate about Marco’s life before they found him, though his injuries suggested he might have been a victim of dog fighting. Remarkably, despite his traumatic past, Marco retained his love and trust for humans, continuing to seek and give affection.
After a long battle, Marco made a miraculous recovery. His once swollen and unrecognizable appearance had transformed, revealing the true, cheerful dog beneath. When he was fully recovered, Marco went into foster care with Katie, who soon decided to adopt him.
Marco now enjoys life with his new family, including other dogs from SRSL, leaving his painful past behind. “Marco is spoiled rotten… truly rotten,” Katie wrote in a note to SRSL, which was shared on Facebook. She described him as a wonderful mix of playful, sweet, intelligent, and protective.
These days, Marco delights in little adventures such as sneaking blankets at bedtime or watching the world from his favorite window spot. His family cherishes his antics and wouldn’t have it any other way. “He’s still just the cutest little man,” Katie shared. “We love our baby boy, Marco!”
