During a recent stroll through Vancouver’s Pacific Spirit Park, two animal enthusiasts, Terry Sparrow and Krista Brisk, stumbled upon something unexpected. As Sparrow went to discard his gum, he noticed movement inside a trash can. Initially, he thought it might be a squirrel or raccoon. However, upon closer inspection, he discovered a fluffy brown dog buried beneath the rubbish.
“It’s heartbreaking, and I’m thankful we were there at the right moment,” Sparrow shared with North Shore News. “I’m still shocked. Who would discard such a beautiful dog like trash?”
Without hesitation, Brisk and Sparrow rescued the distressed pup and sought assistance. The following morning, they contacted local dog rescuer Laurie Schildt, who quickly agreed to foster the dog and organize his care.
“I was heartbroken and angry,” Schildt told The Dodo. “I knew I had to do everything possible to help him.”
The dog was examined by the team at Canada West Veterinary Specialists and was found to have several injuries, including broken ribs, a fractured leg, and a dislocated hip. Though the pup had a challenging road to recovery ahead, Schildt was determined to be by his side throughout the process. She affectionately named him Oscar, a nod to Oscar The Grouch, capturing a piece of his story.
A few days later, Schildt posted an update about Oscar’s progress on social media, praising his resilience and determination to overcome his injuries. “Oscar has adapted wonderfully to my home,” Schildt remarked. “He’s incredibly loving and surprises me every day with his resilience, especially after all he’s been through.”
Oscar’s story resonated widely, with numerous community members and social media followers contributing generously to his ongoing therapy and medical expenses. Schildt expressed deep gratitude for all the support, especially to the veterinarians at Canada West Veterinary Specialists, who offered to help cover some of the costs.
Oscar’s journey seems destined for a happy ending, as Schildt announced she would be adopting him herself. “I decided to adopt Oscar, ensuring his life will be filled with love and happiness,” Schildt said. “He will never experience fear or pain again. I adore this little guy; he’s truly stolen my heart, and I’m excited for our future together with my pack.”
