In Texas, a distressed call for help via Facebook reached the Three Little Pitties Rescue. It revealed a troubling scene—a dog had been left alone beneath a freeway overpass with no one to care for her.
Navigating through language barriers and vague directions, Lindsey, a dedicated member of the rescue team, took on the challenge of finding the injured dog.
Despite the uncertainties, her relentless search paid off when she located the frightened animal and quickly summoned three fellow rescuers to provide critical aid.
Upon her first encounter, Lindsey’s concerns solidified; the dog’s injuries were severe. “From my first angle of seeing her, it looked like her foot had been chopped completely off,” she noted, clearly disturbed.
Without clear information about how long the dog had been abandoned or how her injury occurred, the rescue team speculated she might have been wounded during abandonment or in a vehicle incident.
What was certain, however, was that the dog had endured significant trauma and neglect.
The sight of the weary animal reflected the immense suffering she had faced. Lindsey’s mind raced with questions: “How long was she under that bridge?” and “How long did it take for her to end up in this condition?”
The team’s immediate mission was to provide her with urgent care.
After roughly half an hour, the gentle persistence of the team calmed the dog enough for them to transfer her to a car.
Her discomfort was evident—she could hardly walk—but she managed a small wag of her tail, finding solace with her rescuers. It was late, so they rushed her to an emergency veterinarian in Galveston, Texas.
During the journey, the dog’s condition appeared to worsen. Her cries were heartbreaking, as Lindsey recounted the sadness and pity in her voice.
Diagnosed with Pyometra, a severe uterine infection that occurs when dogs are not spayed, the dog—named Lucie Caboose—was in critical condition.
Multiple infections were ravaging her heart, liver, kidneys, and injured foot, compounded by severe heartworm. Despite strong antibiotics, surgery was initially too risky because of her fragile heart.
Though Lucie showed brief signs of improvement, her health continued to decline due to the overwhelming infections. Her fight ended after several weeks and over $6,000 in medical efforts, as deterioration persisted.
“She went peacefully surrounded by so much love that I hope she felt. She deserved more,” the Three Little Pitties Rescue expressed in a heartfelt Facebook post.
The rescuers did everything in their power for Lucie. Though her injuries were significant, she spent her final days embraced by those who cared deeply for her.
“Lucie, we are so sorry this happened to you. We are sorry your owners failed you. We are sorry we couldn’t save you. We tried so hard to. We loved you and you were worth it. Your life mattered.”
Texas continues to battle a crisis of abandoned animals, with shelters often operating beyond capacity. Lucie’s story is a poignant reminder that no animal should face such neglect or suffering.
