Precious, a Chihuahua born with unusual health challenges, faced a difficult start in life. From birth, her owners noticed that her head appeared larger than typical puppies, but they ignored the signs.
Over time, they also realized that Precious lacked visible pupils, and rather than seeking help, they decided to put her up for adoption, convinced that no one would want her due to her differences.
Concluding that her best option was to be euthanized, they nearly ended her life.
Many puppies with special needs experience tragic fates before they have the chance to feel the comfort and love of a home.
Thankfully, Precious’s story reached Dina Severniches Lemos, a compassionate woman willing to give her a chance.
“We were told about a puppy who hadn’t opened her eyes and had a larger-than-normal skull,” Dina recalled. “The owners mentioned they planned to euthanize her, believing she would only suffer.”
Little Precious faced challenges—her eyes had not fully developed, making it difficult for her to move around without bumping into furniture or walls.
However, she learned to navigate her environment with time and blossomed into a lively, joyful puppy.
All puppies deserve a chance at a happy life regardless of physical differences. It is heartbreaking that some breeders or pet owners decide to give up on animals with special needs without giving them the opportunities they deserve.
