Chella Phillips has dedicated her life to rescuing dogs, turning heartwrenching tales of abandonment into stories of hope. Despite the emotional toll of her work, which often involves witnessing dogs in dire situations, she remains committed to her mission.
Recently, a dog named Athanasia captivated Phillips’ attention more than most. Discovered on a beach, weak and anemic, her condition was dire. Fortunately, due to Phillips’ swift actions, Athanasia was given a chance at recovery.
Described by Phillips as a “cemetery for abandoned and homeless dogs,” the local beach became the site of this poignant rescue. Athanasia, lying under a car in a state of neglect and starvation, revealed signs of being a nursing mother, although her puppies were missing. With the help of volunteers and a nearby resident, Phillips managed to rescue Athanasia and bring her to safety. Despite her severe anemia and malnutrition, Athanasia seemed uninterested in food, further concerning her rescuers.
In a Facebook post, Phillips expressed her distress: “I brought food and gave it to her but she didn’t eat. I could see she was starved but she couldn’t care about the food.” The news that Athanasia had given birth to puppies just four months prior added another layer of shock for Phillips, as she realized her team had already saved those puppies who were now thriving.
Though happy to reunite the canine family, Phillips remained worried about Athanasia’s health. A veterinary examination revealed that Athanasia was suffering from a venereal tumor, mange, and severe dehydration. While her condition was serious, it was treatable. With a regimen of antibiotics, a nutritional diet, and chemotherapy, Athanasia had a fighting chance at recovery.
Assisted by a dedicated veterinary team and bolstered by love and care, Athanasia began to heal and transform. In a matter of weeks, she went from being a “pathetic little girl” with a sadness deeply etched into her face to a joyful and healthy dog with a bright future.
Athanasia now resides in a temporary home, enjoying a peaceful existence with music and the company of other rescued dogs. Phillips fondly describes her as a “cuddle bug,” delighted by her sweet nature and friendliness towards both humans and dogs. This makes Athanasia an excellent candidate for adoption.
While her puppies have already found loving homes, Phillips remains hopeful that a forever family will soon embrace Athanasia.
