Eight years ago, Alesha Brandt’s daughter witnessed an unsettling scene as she stepped off a bus: someone carelessly discarded a tiny dog onto the street from a car. Concerned, she hurried to the distressed animal and immediately called her mother for help.
The mother-daughter duo wasted no time in taking the frail dog to a veterinarian. The poor dog was shockingly underweight, deaf in one ear, and suffered an eye injury so severe that it required surgical removal. Initially, the dog’s survival seemed doubtful.
“She was literally tossed into our life,” Brandt shared with The Dodo. “She wasn’t expected to survive the night, but she pulled through.”
When the courageous dog recovered enough to be adopted, Brandt and her daughter knew she belonged with them. They lovingly named her Captain Jackie Sparrow the One-Eyed Wonder Dog, though she’s also affectionately called Meply.
Shortly after her adoption, Meply injured her leg attempting to jump off the couch. Due to her fragility and previous health issues, saving her leg wasn’t possible, leading to its removal. Now equipped with one eye, three legs, and a single functioning ear, Meply remains blissfully unaware of her physical differences.
Currently about ten years old, Meply is vibrant and full of character. Despite weighing just four pounds, she exudes the confidence of a much larger animal, asserting her authority over other dogs with ease.
“She does seem to believe she is every dog’s boss,” Brandt remarked.
Meply is deeply attached to her family, especially Alesha Brandt, whom she follows everywhere. Her petite size makes her an ideal travel companion, allowing her and her mom to embark on journeys totaling around 60,000 miles yearly. Meply delights in meeting new people, who are often moved by her resilience and joy.
“People usually spontaneously start crying when they meet her and want to hold and pet her,” Brandt mentioned.
Despite her bold demeanor, Meply still encounters daily hurdles. Her balance can be tricky, and she has a noticeable head tilt. Navigating stairs proves challenging; she can manage about six steps before tiring and opts to be carried rather than descending stairs. While she isn’t one to complain, her family remains vigilant to ensure her well-being, as her quiet nature can mask discomfort.
Amid all the adversities, Meply’s spirit remains remarkably positive and loving. Her presence is a cherished gift to her family, who are deeply grateful that she became a part of their lives.
