Imagine stumbling across a frightened puppy, frail and alone, in the middle of nowhere. For anyone who loves dogs, it’s a heart-wrenching sight, especially if the pup is too young to fend for itself.
This is precisely what happened to a pit bull named Hank. At just eight months old, Hank was left in the woods by his former owners. Although they left behind some of his belongings and an unopened bag of food, little Hank had no way of helping himself.
However, the kindness of strangers soon changed his fate.
In the forests of Florida, a compassionate individual discovered Hank. The puppy sat frozen on his dog bed, not moving a muscle, even as the stranger approached. Nearby, there was a bag of dog food and some toys, left by his previous owners but useless to him as he couldn’t open the bag.
The thing that troubled the passerby most was Hank’s complete lack of response. It seemed as though the little puppy had turned into a living statue, his spirit seemingly broken.
Having no clue about the puppy’s origins or how he ended up there, the Good Samaritan decided not to disturb the helpless animal. Instead, he reached out to a local animal shelter to ensure Hank received the help he needed.
After spending two weeks alone in the wilderness, shelter staff came to Hank’s rescue. They approached him cautiously, concerned he might be wary of humans given his circumstances. But to their surprise, Hank was full of gratitude and affection.
According to Rosa Fond, the head of Humans and Animals United, Hank quickly charmed the entire shelter team with his sweet and loving demeanor. He seemed to understand that his rescuers were there to help and he expressed his appreciation in the only way he knew how.
Upon examining Hank, a veterinarian uncovered the reason for his lack of movement. He had a broken leg, likely sustained before his abandonment. Despite the absence of other violent injuries, the exact circumstances of his past remained a mystery.
What was certain, though, was Hank’s urgent need for leg surgery. Fond didn’t hesitate to commit to covering the costs of his medical treatment. Unfortunately, due to malnourishment, Hank was not immediately ready for surgery. Instead, he received ample care, love, and attention until he regained his strength.
After successfully undergoing surgery, Hank moved to a foster home where he is now enjoying happy days. Although many people have shown interest in adopting the lovable puppy, Rosa Fond believes it’s best to let him heal fully before moving on to a new permanent home.
“He’s going to need some time before he’s completely ready for adoption, but he’s safe now, and no one will ever hurt him again,” Fond shared.
