In Pembroke Pines, Florida, a compassionate individual felt heartbroken upon discovering a severely neglected dog wandering near a local school. This twelve-year-old stray, later named Clara, was in dire condition: emaciated, dehydrated, and suffering from a leg injury that hindered her movement. Her fur was infested with fleas and worms, and she was blind with swollen eyes.
The kind-hearted person promptly informed the Pembroke Pines Police Department. Upon scanning Clara, officers found a microchip that led them to a shocking discovery. Clara had an owner residing in Fort Lauderdale, yet when contacted, the owner revealed that Clara had been missing since May of 2024. Surprisingly, they expressed no desire to reunite with her. This prompted further investigation by the police, as they suspected Clara might have been abused and abandoned.

Recognizing Clara’s urgent need for medical care, the police sought help from Angela Goodwin, the founder of Pooches in Pines, a local animal rescue organization. Deeply affected by Clara’s plight, Goodwin was determined to find her a safe haven. She reached out to Abandoned Pet Rescue, the only no-kill shelter in Fort Lauderdale. The shelter welcomed Clara with open arms, committed to her care.
Shelter manager Kara Starzyk expressed her gratitude to the Good Samaritan for saving Clara. She believed the dog would not have survived much longer on the streets, where she faced numerous dangers, including the risk of being hit by a car.
Veterinarians at Abandoned Pet Rescue discovered that Clara suffered from a uterine infection, necessitating emergency surgery. Yet Clara’s anemia made the procedure risky. Despite the odds, Clara’s resilience shone through, and after a successful operation, she began her recovery in a nurturing foster home.

As time passed, Clara’s health steadily improved. She was prescribed antibiotics, supplements, and eye drops. Her spirit remained strong, and she gradually regained her strength and ability to walk. Despite her past of abuse, Clara proved to be affectionate and sociable.
In a Facebook post, Abandoned Pet Rescue shared Clara’s progress, noting, “She now barks for attention and food and loves to snuggle into warm blankets.”
Although Clara requires regular medical checkups and daily eye drops, her caretakers are hopeful for her future. They wish for her to find a peaceful home with caring humans who can shower her with the love she truly deserves. Clara’s story serves as a testament to her enduring spirit and the compassionate efforts of those dedicated to giving her a second chance.
