The scorching summer heat can be especially difficult for pets, and it’s even tougher for stray animals who often struggle with hunger and loneliness. Despite Southern California’s sunshine being a favorite for many, it can threaten the lives of abandoned animals.

In Irvine, California, a woman strolling through a park spotted something peculiar—a small, fearful dog hiding from the sun. When she tried to get closer, the frightened dog ran away.

Determined to help, the woman reached out to Suzette Hall, the founder of Logan’s Legacy Dog Rescue in Irvine.

Suzette wasted no time and arrived promptly to assist. The dog, however, was too scared to let anyone near him. “He desperately needed help but wouldn’t let anyone approach.

He’d run away and then return to his chosen shady spot behind a building,” Suzette shared with The Dodo.

That day, the temperature reached a sweltering 92 degrees, and the little dog was shivering from dehydration and fear. Hall decided to use a humane trap, placing hot dogs inside to help lure him safely.

Then something unexpected happened. “He began to run away but suddenly stopped. After sniffing the treats in the trap, he quickly turned around and dashed right in,” Hall explained.

It was the swiftest response to a trap that Hall had witnessed. Within minutes, the dog was secure. Once inside Hall’s air-conditioned van, the little dog, suffering from heat exhaustion, started to relax.

“I had driven just a few miles when I heard him sigh. Looking back, I saw him fast asleep with both eyes tightly shut; he seemed to know he was finally safe,” Hall wrote on her Facebook page.

Now named Mulligan, the dog was taken to Camino Pet Hospital for a full examination and urgent medical care. Afterward, he was placed into a foster home.

“He is full of joy now, always smiling. He’s incredibly sweet, and I adore him,” Hall remarked.

Mulligan is thriving in his foster home, though he is still in need of a permanent family to give him the love and security he deserves.
